Spotlight Player of the Day | Gavin Reyan
Published on April 28, 2023
Name: Gavin Reyan
Player Name: Voltage
School: Everett Area High School
Age: 18
Grade: 12th
Esports game(s): Overwatch
Parents: Shasta Weist
Esports achievements: We are currently 2-3 in Overwatch. I think that’s a pretty good achievement considering this is Everett’s first year in esports and that some of our players are new to Overwatch.
Coach’s quote: “Gavin is the best player on our most successful team our first year. He could play any role but we put him at support because he is strong at everything. He would be a great asset and bonafide starter on any team I think.” – Everett Area Team Manager Johnny Lacko
Favorite subject: English
Favorite movie: WALL-E
Favorite video game: It’s probably a tie between the Pokemon series and the Fallout series. I adore both of them and it’s kind of hard to decide between them. I’ve loved the Pokemon games ever since I was around 3 or 4 years old and I love Fallout for its post-apocalyptic setting and story.
Favorite food: Turkey
Favorite teacher (subject taught): Mrs. Otis (English)
Favorite song: I don’t think I have a specific favorite but I do like a wide variety of songs. Some examples of my top favorites would be Riptide by Vance Joy, Pompeii by Bastille, and American Idiot by Green Day.
Favorite app on your phone: As I said earlier, I’m a big Pokemon fan so I would have to say Pokemon GO.
Outside interest: I enjoy fishing during the summertime.
If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?: I think that I would want to be a cheetah. Cheetahs are my favorite animals and that’s probably because I have always loved cats ever since I was little. So a large cat that is also the fastest land animal in the world? Oh yeah, favorite animal material right there.
Favorite esports team: I used to watch San Francisco Shock play in the Overwatch League a lot so I’d say them.
Esport player most admired: Super is a professional Overwatch player who was in San Francisco Shock from 2018 to 2021. Several times throughout his career, he was ranked #1 in his region for the Tank role. I admire him and watch all of his YouTube videos. I aspire to be anywhere near his level of skill and coordination someday.
Most influential person on my esports career: I’d say my coach Mr. Lacko would be the most influential. He always has lots of confidence in us as a team and he always lifts us up if we’re feeling bummed out about losing.
Most impressive esports player that you have competed against: There was a player from West Branch who went by DPSdiff in-game. He was very skilled when it came to hitting his shots and he coordinated with his team very well. He was a large reason as to why West Branch defeated us in our match. I respect him and he seemed pretty cool when we were talking in the chat before the match started.
Proudest esports achievement: When we were up against Shade, my entire team was about to take a ton of damage and lose the point we were holding. One of Shade’s players was playing Ashe and I was playing Lucio. They used their ultimate and it threw me up into the air. I was for sure done for, as the commentators said, but I was miraculously able use my ultimate in time and essentially saved my entire team by doing so. One of the commentators seemed very surprised and he gave a little praise which made it feel like I really did something big.
How I got my start: About a year or so ago, I moved away from Everett and went to a different school. Then a few months ago, around November, I moved back to Everett. A friend, who is currently on the team right now, told me about how Everett is getting an esports team. At first I wasn’t super interested but then he said that Overwatch is one of the games that we can play in esports. I’ve been playing Overwatch since 2017 so it intrigued me and I signed up. A decent bit of our players are new to Overwatch so I thought it would be good for me to show them the ropes and teach them how different characters work. I was so stoked when I found out that I made it onto the team. Now I’m a Support player on the Everett esports team and I’m so glad I joined. I’ve had a blast talking and playing with my teammates and it makes me wish that I could play next year too.
Future goal: As of right now, I don’t really have any future plans or goals. I think it would be amazing to play for a esports team after I graduate from highschool so I’m going to have to look into it.
